To celebrate Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’ve developed this infographic with helpful tips for improving the security of your mobile device. Download, save, or print this handy reference with information you can use for maintaining the security of your Apple or Android mobile devices.
Always think about where you are
- At home = private network
- Coffee shop/hotel = public/shared network
- IT convention = public network shared with potential hackers
Wifi
- Don’t leave on if you don’t need it.
- Don’t automatically connect to unknown networks.
- If you need to connect to unknown/public networks, consider using a company VPN or reputable commercial VPN (Private Internet Access, ProtonVPN, etc.).
Bluetooth
- Don’t leave on if you don’t need it.
- Needed for Smart Watches, headsets, etc.
Location Services (under General Settings, Privacy & Security)
- OK to have “on.”
- Select setting by app, not one for all.
- Does your GPS need your location? Yes.
- Does Life360 need to know your location? Maybe/Yes.
- Do Photos or your Camera app need to know your location? No.
- Do Facebook, Chrome, Safari, Instagram, etc. need to know your location? Probably not.
- If set to “While using,” make sure to turn off the app when you are done (swipe it away to close).
General recommendations
- Implement a screen lock passcode (use a minimum of 6 digits, but 8 is better).
- Biometrics (facial recognition or fingerprints) are great too, but could be abused under certain scenarios. Think about your threat profile.
- NEVER reuse passwords for anything (email accounts, mobile access, online accounts).
- Install updates to your mobile and personal computers as soon as possible.
