How Data Privacy Week Began
Every year at the end of January, organizations around the world recognize Data Privacy Week, anchored by Data Privacy Day on January 28. The observance began in 2007 as Data Protection Day, established by the Council of Europe to commemorate the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty focused on data protection and privacy.
In the United States and Canada, the initiative was later championed by the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) and expanded into Data Privacy Week to encourage broader awareness and action.
Data Privacy Week is more than a calendar event; it’s a reminder that personal data is one of the most valuable assets in today’s digital world. As organizations collect, store, and share increasing amounts of information, the responsibility to protect that data has never been greater.
The week serves as an opportunity to educate individuals and businesses about privacy best practices, strengthen data protection programs, and promote transparency and trust in how information is handled.
